Alexander Mcqueen: Savage Beauty...Inspiration

Flicking through my Savage Beauty book, I came across a few picture of designs of Mcqueen's that best represent an element of my personal design aesthetic...

they are really inspiring and are the kind of thing id like to achieve in the feel of my garment...

Elegant and destroyed

ethereal

destroyed, worn, impoverished, wanting, hoping

curvy, feminine, exagerated

Structure on a human...

After a while of experimenting onto the stand, we started playing with the structure and placing it onto a member of our group...

this really gave a good indication to how the structure looked when it moved and interacted with a moving human being.

Some of the details....

Some of the details of the Glue and Cloth structure where really interesting...

I could very well see some of these as details on garments...

Could be translated into a shoulder/ hip detail ?

The ink on the fabric really adds a difference and interest to an otherwise prescriptive structure.

Experimenting with legs...

Looks quite flattering, despite its knicker like appearance, good scope for looking at skirts? developing into skirts ?

There is something very Japanese to the shape of this...

The mix of shapes is interesting...the way the swirling forms interact with the draping and the stretched pieces.

In other experimentation...

I really think this was successful...

I like the Asymmetrical, slightly exaggerated shape and the placement of colour...

This is something id like to develop further...

It contrasts subtly, but is in harmony...

The structure that we used was one that our group constructed in our own private study time.

The structure on the stand...

I like the fact that this creation couldn't have been designed on paper. The shapes and angles that have been created are beautiful...

there is a real sense of wildness mixed with a refinement...

It hangs off the female form in an edgy way...

I quite like the process and would love to do it again in terms of a final garment ?

The structure on the stand...

quirky, edgy shapes

something very organic...

Swirling forms, nude and white and beige...

I really like the shoulder detail...looks like it is boned

Glue, Cloth and Tights...

The first stage of this 'activity' was to create a 'sculpture' out of, first and foremost, a chair. but this could be adapted and many other things where used to supplement the chair...

Things like a table; a cone and other chairs to create a really interesting, angular structure.

It was then covered in clingfilm and the Mutton cloth and Tights where stretched, knotted and twisted over the 'sculpture' to create a covering which we , as a group, then covered with watered down PVA glue to harden up the structure...

Whilst the PVA was still wet, we dribbled Ink onto parts of the fabric to give an interesting point of difference.

It is then left to dry, when it can then be taken off and placed onto a dress stand to be manipulated and draped.

Sunday

Marie Antoinette.

I was looking back over some of my paper experiments and came to this one and thought how much it reminded me of

Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette

Luxury; Decadence; Majesty; Wealth; Gluttony; Debauchery

How Brilliant

Week three - Rule based art, a bit bigger - Part 6 - The one ?

This was the structure that I created with Sharan, my other, when we merged our structures together. I like the contrast of hard and sleek and flowing and curling.

It works well in terms of proportion, and it has given me many ideas for designs.

It recalls images of work by Martin Margiela

And Viktor & Rolf

Its the general feel of the angular shapes that recall the structure I have created.
